Drone safety risk

In addition to the widespread use of drones for leisure purposes, professional applications of unmanned aviation are now also facing a real boom. The EU's large-scale SESAR European Drones Outlook Study forecasts a total of 200,000 drones within the EU by 2025. Numerous application-related pilot projects show real added value for agriculture, aid and blue light organisations, surveying, inspections, delivery services, filming and many other areas of application.

Solutions now need to be found to ensure safety when so many (new) flying objects have to share the airspace.

Our solution

The "SafeAviationTyrol" project lays the foundation for the safety requirements and creates strategically important core components of the new U-Space solutions prescribed by the EU and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) from 2019:

  • Comprehensive radio coverage of drones and civil air traffic close to the ground
  • Recording of flight movements, localisation and geoinformation of flight participants
  • Localisation of aircraft with ADS-B, FLARM and new transponders, accompanied by multilateration and field strength evaluation, radio characterisation of unregistered drones
  • Detect & Avoid facility for drones with pilot alarm and collision avoidance
  • Environmentally friendly measurement of radio data networks (4G, 5G) with secure drone connectivity

How does it all work in practice? Watch our short video and get to know the team behind the project.

The Tyrolean joint project between us, twins GmbH, the Management Centre Innsbruck and the University of Innsbruck (Microelectronics and Implantable Systems) is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

Further information on the IWB/EFRE funding programme can be found here.

The funding project centres on hardware and software for maximum security in airspace. People and their privacy should be protected and disruptions, industrial espionage and threats avoided as far as possible.

Safe drone flight

We were able to successfully pilot the solution and we are already in talks with companies that are very interested in using the technology for their specific applications.

Georg Rinnhofer Head of Unified Communications

We are particularly proud of this

With this project, we are creating the basis for many applications for the beneficial use of drones in the future. The technologies used are affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly because existing infrastructure can also be utilised.

At World Direct, we develop software and operate IT infrastructure for the medical, energy, property, finance, telecommunications and public sectors.
Together with our parent company A1 and co-operation partners, we create new solutions for a digital future.
